The UTD APC Athenaeum Phase I includes the Crow Museum of Asian Art that features 16,000 sf of flexible gallery space. The building is designed with a second floor larger than the ground floor creating covered exterior spaces. This project detailed in SDS/2 can be called the ‘TRUSS project’. The biggest truss is 207 ft long & 24 ft high, weighing around 80 tons. Moreover the most unique components were the tube supports for swooping precast panels, dubbed the ‘pipe noodles’.

The Baylor Hurd Welcome Center located in Waco, Texas, features four 100ft tall conical towers making the job a real challenge in both detailing and fabrication. Each tower weighs 21.5 tons and consists of 4 sloping pipe columns connected with circular & oval rings. All that cut with 1/16" tolerance, using printed templates prepared by our team. The split screen modeling function in SDS/2 was very helpful on this job. The complex tower geometry and rolled material production process with extra shop adjustment made this project really special.

American Zinc Recycling is a leading recycler of electric arc furnace dust. The industrial repair project for their Chicago, Illinois facility featured a large settling chamber hopper and support framing with sloped beams. In addition to the challenging geometry on this project, we also stepped up to manage many design conflicts after the original EOR left the project. SDS2 was setup to meet the demanding design criteria, though several connections had to be designed by a registered connection engineer due to the significant load requirements.

Rogers-O’Brien was awarded the Austin Independent School District’s Rosedale School. The school offers tailored educational opportunities and quality instruction for children with special needs. Students are taught skills to increase their indpendence, while simulatneously increasing their self esteem, ultimately leading to a higher quality of life. The old campus was relocated to the AISD Lucy Read Pre-K Campus, where a new state-of-the-art facility was constructed. As for the structure, it features a fairly unique concave roof, that has been left uncovered from underneath, so that steel is visible to the occupants.

William P Hobby Airport in Houston constructed its first international terminal, transforming the airport into an international gateway to Latin America. The terminal is a two-storey building with a built-up area of 280,000-square-foot, and it features five international gates.
Besides the construction of a new international terminal, the project also included the development of a FIS facility, construction of a multilevel parking garage, expansion of the security screening checkpoint, and others.
There were a number of challenges in design and construction. While new structures were constructed and connections from the older to the newer features were being made, all airport-related traffic had to be maintained. One of the challenges was a need for the electrical room’s roof to act as a concourse floor for the new terminal building.
The new terminal building is connected to the existing terminal at both the second floor and the roof. New frame structures were strategically placed to minimize added loading to the existing members. Computer software, including RISA-3D, was used to model and analyze the existing building as well as the proposed structures. Another structural solution was to support the Cloud Room from the roof structure and then remove the columns below.

The museum is six-level structure with a reinforced concrete and structural steel frame features an exterior skin of Indiana limestone and large cast-aluminum panels, designed by architect Josef Paul Kleihues. The stairwell in the northwest corner is often cited as the buildings most interesting and dynamic artistic feature. Constructed of Black Impala granite, architect intended for the interior staircase- lit by fixtures he designed- to guide visitors through the building. The architect echoed the ellipsoid shape of the stairwell, one of the museum’s most photographed features, in the building’s elevator button panels and other architectural details. The staircase creates an impressive, if dizzying, view, and is a work of art in itself.

Using structural steel to define and highlight the major spaces, the mayor of Frisco, likened the complex to a trip to the airport or opera. Defining the central circulation path, a 1,550' long sloping and curling steel roof structure spans the entire spine of the complex. Constructed of tension supported steel rod "king post" trusses resting on angled clerestory tube trusses, the roof structure undulates along the spine.
Secondary spaces are defined by unique roof forms supported by a variety of truss systems, such as tension ring and bicycle wheel trusses. An innovative winged single-truss pedestrian bridge and fan truss mark the main entrance. This two story, 947,000 SF regional retail mall with a 196,000 SF 3rd floor cinema was recognized with an Engineering Award of Excellence by the American Institute of Steel Construction AISC.
